Steak Thursday

My friends Cary and Daniel stayed in Chicago for a few days last week. Daniel shared with me a tradition he created called Steak Thursday. The premise:

Every Thursday you have an obligation to treat yourself to a steak.

This doesn’t necessarily entail eating a gigantic sirloin (here here). Instead, it means you do something to treat yourself…your own personal “steak.” For you it may be a massage or a round of golf, ice cream or a deep dish pizza, a cold beer or a joint.

The benefits of Steak Thursday are many:

  • “Should I? Shouldn’t I?” decisions are made easy on Steak Thursday - YES YOU SHOULD.
  • Thursday is improved as a day, joining Friday, Saturday and Sunday as great days. Wednesday is now Steak Thursday eve and is considered good. Monday and Tuesday are the sole remaining ordinary days of the week.
  • You get to enjoy “steak.”

The final component of this ritual is the Steak Thursday prayer, which Daniel explained should be recited while you are enjoying your “steak” and must be said verbatim.

“I worked damn hard for this steak. I deserve it and I’m going to enjoy it.”

Amen, Daniel. Amen.
