Chumbawamba - Add Me
Yes, you read that right…Chumbawamba. THAT Chumbawamba. They have a new album out and I can’t stop listening to it. Lyrically, they’re tongue in cheek, similar to OK Go or Say Anything. Musically, they sound like a barbershop quartet crossed with a folk band. They walk a similar line to Fountains of Wayne, going as close to the edge of saccharine as possible without falling off into a pop music wasteland.
Some little known Chumbawamba facts:
- They began in 1985
- They were once staunchly anti-major label, even participating in a compilation CD titled “Fuck EMI”
- They signed to that same label, EMI, in 1997 and soon after released their hit single “Tubthumping”
- Despite “selling out” to EMI, Chumbawamba retained an anti-corporate stance for most of their career. In response to Nike’s offer of $1.5 million to use their song in a commercial, Chumbawamba reportedly replied that it took “thirty seconds to say no.”
The album is called “The Boy Bands Have Won” and it’s out now on iTunes in DRM-free ACC goodness.
