Forced Gestures [Office Drudgery]
A lady brings me two clear plastic folders marked “circulation.”
Inside lies a form and a birthday card. The top of the form is a list of everyone in the office, some with checkmarks next to their name. At the bottom is the name of someone who has an upcoming birthday. The birthday card is brown and has “Happy Birthday” stamped on the front and a slew of notes and signatures in the middle.
“Write a note and then set it in the cubicle next to you,” I’m told.
Wouldn’t a note or small gift from a few close co-workers mean more than a socially obligated gesture from the entire office?
