Super! Delegates
I came across Hillary Clinton’s new propaganda website today: Delegate Hub
(Seriously, the one domain name I haven’t registered. What was I thinking.)
Hillary is actually lobbying to have the delegates from Michigan and Florida seated at the national convention, despite the Democratic National Committee ruling long ago that they wouldn’t be counted.
Neither Hillary nor her campaign made a significant objection to the decision prior to each state’s respective primary. In fact, some of her backers were on the committee that made the decision to strip Michigan and Florida of their delegates and actively supported it. Now that Hillary has won in both states (where none of the candidates campaigned), she wants to seat the delegates.
Most of the major Democratic candidates removed their names from the Michigan ballot, including John Edwards and Barack Obama. Hillary left her name intact because “removing her name from the ballot would be a needless insult to the state’s voters.” Oh, it was for the voters. What a woman of the people. She works the night shift and she cares about YOU Michigan and Florida. That’s why Hillary was so vocal about your oppression prior to the primaries. Oh wait…
Heck, it’s not like Barack didn’t want those states to count. The DNC originally gave Florida a month to move their primary to an acceptable date and an Obama spokesman then commented:
“Hopefully, in the next 30 days, Florida and the DNC can reach agreement so Florida’s delegates can contribute to the nomination contest.”
Counting delegates from these states after the fact would be akin to a teacher giving a non-graded pretest to a 6th grade math class and not giving them time to study. Then, once the papers are handed in, telling the students the test will count after all…for 8% of their total grade. (See that quick math? I’d ace that pretest). As someone a few days ago noted, even a six-year-old knows this is fundamentally unfair.
Hillary also thinks Super! Delegates should not necessarily follow the will of the voters, but rather choose the candidate they think would be best for the country. For once, I couldn’t agree more. The latest national Zogby poll shows Obama leading John McCain 47 percent to 40 percent if the election was held today. The same poll shows McCain besting Clinton 50 percent to 38 percent. The Hillary campaign has also begun a barrage of mudslinging in recent weeks. Not only has the Obama campaign remained relatively unstained, but they have also refused to reciprocate (although others aren’t so kind).
If the Super! Delegates intend to live up to their name, they’ll make the right decision for the Democratic party and the country. They’ll nominate Barack Obama.
